Spring Plant Care Checklist: Repotting, Fertilizing, and Growth

Every year around February or March, something shifts. A new leaf unfurls on a plant that hasn't done anything since October. The pothos on the shelf suddenly looks like it's actually trying. Spring is arriving, and your plants know it before you do.
The next eight to ten weeks are the most important window of the year for indoor plant care. What you do (or don't do) during this period sets the trajectory for the entire growing season. Repotting, fertilizing, pruning, propagating, pest management: everything happens now, and it all happens at once.[1]

When Spring Actually Starts for Houseplants
Forget the calendar. March 20th means nothing to your plants. What matters is photoperiod (the number of daylight hours your home receives) and light intensity.[1] In most of the northern hemisphere, the real shift happens when daily light crosses roughly 12 hours and sun angles push brighter light deeper into your rooms.
For most locations between 35 and 50 degrees north latitude, that transition starts in late February and becomes unmistakable by mid-March. In the northern US, Canada, or the UK, expect late March or early April.
The practical test: stand where your plants live at midday. Does the light feel meaningfully brighter than January? Are sun patches reaching further across the floor? That's spring arriving for your plants.
Measure the shift: A cheap lux meter app on your phone (try "Light Meter" on iOS or "Lux Light Meter" on Android) can quantify this change. Take a reading at your brightest plant spot in January and compare it to the same spot in March. You'll often see a 2x to 3x increase in lux values, and that's the signal your plants respond to.
Signs Your Plants Are Waking Up
Before you start repotting and fertilizing everything in sight, confirm that your specific plants are actually coming out of dormancy. Jumping the gun and fertilizing a plant that's still dormant can cause root burn and set it back further.[3]
New growth points. Small nubs forming at stem tips, leaf nodes, or soil level. On aroids, a pointed new leaf emerging from the sheath of the most recent leaf. On succulents, new rosette leaves from the center. On ferns, fiddleheads uncurling from the crown.
Increased water uptake. A plant that stayed moist for two weeks in winter now dries out in eight or nine days. This is often the first sign, before any visible growth appears.[2]
Root tips at drainage holes. Active white or light-colored tips poking through mean the root system is expanding and repotting may be needed.[6]
Aerial root activity. On climbing aroids, dormant aerial roots that looked dry all winter start showing green or white growing tips.
Leaf color changes. New growth on many tropicals emerges lighter or reddish before darkening. A shift in overall tone means metabolic activity is ramping up.

The Spring Repotting Window
Spring is repotting season because active root growth means the plant colonizes new soil quickly, reducing the risk of fresh soil staying wet and developing fungal problems.[6] The ideal window runs from clear signs of new growth through about mid-June. After that, summer heat makes repotting an unnecessary stressor.
Which Plants Need Repotting
Not every plant needs a bigger pot every spring. Prioritize based on actual need.[1]
Repot now (high priority):
- Plants with roots circling the bottom of the pot or emerging from drainage holes in dense mats
- Plants that dry out within two or three days of watering, even in winter
- Plants that have been in the same soil for more than two years (the soil structure breaks down and compaction kills drainage)
- Plants showing stunted growth last season despite adequate light and fertilizer
- Any plant where you can lift the entire root ball out of the pot as a solid, root-bound cylinder
Can wait: Plants repotted last spring that still have room. Slow growers (ZZ, snake plant, hoya) that haven't outgrown their pots. Plants currently blooming (repotting stress can abort flowers). Anything stressed by pests or disease.
Don't repot: Plants showing no signs of growth yet. Newly purchased plants still acclimating (wait two to four weeks). Cacti and succulents that are happy and slightly root-bound (many bloom better this way).[6]
How to Repot Correctly
Go up one pot size only. That means one to two inches in diameter for most plants. A 4-inch pot moves to a 6-inch. A 6-inch to an 8-inch. Jumping to a much larger pot leaves too much unused soil around the roots, which stays wet and invites rot.[6]
Step by step:
- Water the plant the day before. Hydrated roots are flexible and less prone to tearing.
- Prepare the new pot (drainage holes required). Soak terracotta for 30 minutes first.
- Remove the plant, shake off old soil gently. Use fingers or a chopstick to loosen circling roots without shredding them.
- Trim any dead roots (brown, mushy, hollow) with clean scissors.
- Add fresh mix to the bottom so the plant sits at the same depth as before. Never bury the crown.
- Fill around the sides, tapping the pot to settle soil. Don't pack it down hard.
- Water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes.
Skip the pebble layer: The old advice about "drainage layers" of rocks or broken pottery at the bottom of the pot has been debunked by soil science. It actually creates a perched water table that keeps the root zone wetter, not drier. Just use a well-draining mix and a pot with holes.[6]
Soil Mixes by Plant Type
Generic "houseplant potting mix" from a bag is a starting point, but most plants do better with amendments. Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Espoma Organic Potting Mix both work as a base. Note that Fox Farm runs nutrient-hot, so avoid it for sensitive seedlings or calatheas. Adjust ratios from there.[4]
Tropical aroids (monstera, philodendron, pothos): Two parts potting mix, one part perlite, one part orchid bark. Chunky, well-draining, mimics their epiphytic natural habitat.
Succulents and cacti: One part potting mix, one part coarse sand or pumice, one part perlite. Or use a pre-mixed gritty blend from Bonsai Jack.
Ferns and calatheas: Two parts potting mix, one part perlite, one part coco coir. Retains moisture while still draining.
Hoyas and orchids: One part potting mix, one part orchid bark, one part perlite. Very chunky. Some growers skip the potting mix entirely.
Warning: Avoid using garden soil or topsoil in containers. It compacts severely, drains poorly, and often carries pathogens and insects that become major problems indoors.[4]
Spring is a short window. The work you put in now pays off for the rest of the year. A properly repotted, fertilized, pest-free plant in April will give you six months of vigorous growth and minimal problems.
Restarting Fertilizer After Winter
If you've been following the standard advice of pausing fertilizer during winter (and you should be), spring is when you bring it back.[3] But don't go from zero to full strength overnight.
When to Start
Begin fertilizing when you see active new growth, not when the calendar says "spring." For most indoor plants in the northern hemisphere, that's somewhere between early March and mid-April.[1] If your plants haven't shown any new growth yet, hold off. Feeding a dormant plant pushes salts into soil that the roots aren't actively absorbing, which builds up and can cause fertilizer burn.[3]
The Ramp-Up Period
For the first two to three feedings, use fertilizer at half the recommended strength. This gives the roots time to wake up to nutrients gradually. After that, move to full strength on whatever schedule your fertilizer type calls for.[5]
NPK Ratios: What Your Plants Actually Need
NPK stands for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), the three primary macronutrients. The ratio on the bottle tells you the relative proportions.[3]
Foliage plants (monstera, pothos, philodendron, ferns, calathea): Look for a balanced or nitrogen-forward ratio. A 3-1-2 ratio or balanced 10-10-10 both work well. Nitrogen drives leaf production, which is the whole point with these plants. Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro (9-3-6) is a popular choice among serious growers because it includes all necessary micronutrients in one bottle.
Flowering plants (African violets, hoyas, orchids, peace lilies): Higher phosphorus can support bloom formation. Jack's Classic Blossom Booster (10-30-20) is a common choice, though some growers (especially hoya collectors) find that balanced fertilizer at consistent strength promotes blooms just as well. For orchids, use a balanced orchid fertilizer at quarter-strength with every watering ("weakly, weekly").
Cacti and succulents: Low nitrogen, higher phosphorus and potassium. A 2-7-7 ratio or dedicated cactus fertilizer like Schultz Cactus Plus. Too much nitrogen causes etiolated, weak growth.
Liquid vs. Slow-Release
Liquid fertilizer gives precise control, applied every one to two weeks. Slow-release granules (Osmocote 14-14-14) go into the top inch of soil and feed for three to four months with one application.[5] Both work. If you have fewer than 20 plants, liquid is manageable. If you have 50 or more, slow-release saves sanity.
Water first, then feed: Never fertilize bone-dry soil. Always water first (or at minimum, water lightly), then apply liquid fertilizer. Fertilizing dry roots is the fastest way to cause chemical burn, especially on sensitive plants like calatheas and ferns.[3]
Light Adjustments for Spring
As the sun climbs higher and daylight hours increase, the light inside your home shifts fast. A spot that was perfect in December might be too intense by April.[2]
Clean Your Windows
This one is underrated. A winter's worth of grime, condensation residue, and dust on your windows can block 20 to 40 percent of incoming light. Clean both sides of the glass. The difference is immediately visible, and your plants respond within days.
Reassess Placement and Rotate
South-facing windows go from manageable in winter to scorching by late spring. Plants thriving near a south window in January may show sunburn by April.[4] Move sensitive plants back or add a sheer curtain. Conversely, plants in dim spots all winter can now move closer to brighter exposures.
Rotate every plant a quarter turn every two weeks. If you skipped this all winter, they're probably visibly lopsided. Consistent rotation produces balanced growth and prevents permanently bent stems.[2]

Adjusting Your Watering Schedule
This catches people off guard every spring. Active growth means more transpiration and faster water uptake.[2] A plant you watered every 12 to 14 days in winter might need water every 7 to 9 days by mid-spring, and every 5 to 7 days by summer.
The rule stays the same: water based on soil moisture, not a calendar. But check more frequently. Use the finger test (top inch or two should be dry for most tropicals) or a moisture meter like the Sustee aquameter or the cheaper XLUX T10 probe.[4] Warmer indoor temperatures from open windows and turned-off heaters also increase soil evaporation.
Pruning and Shaping
Spring is the best time to prune because the plant pushes new growth from cut points almost immediately.[1] In winter, a pruning cut just sits there. In spring, dormant buds below the cut activate within a week or two.
Leggy growth. Cut back to a node (where leaves attach). New branches form at or near the cut.
Dead or damaged leaves. Clear anything brown, crispy, or yellowed so the plant redirects energy to new growth.
Crowded interior growth. Thin dense interior branches on ficus, schefflera, and jade. This improves air circulation and lets light reach inner leaves.
Overgrown vines. Pothos, tradescantia, and heartleaf philodendron can be cut back aggressively in spring. They recover fast and come back bushier.[4]
Use clean, sharp tools. Bypass pruners (Felco 2 or Fiskars) for anything thicker than a pencil; scissors for thinner stems. Wipe blades with rubbing alcohol between plants. Cut just above a leaf node at a slight angle.
Save your cuttings: Almost everything you prune in spring can be propagated. You're getting a better-shaped plant and free new plants at the same time.
Propagation: Why Spring Cuttings Root Faster
Every propagation method works better in spring. Stem cuttings root faster. Division establishes more quickly. Air layers callus and produce roots in weeks instead of months.[4] The plant's growth hormones (primarily auxin) are at peak production, and actively metabolizing cells produce roots more readily than dormant tissue.
Best Plants to Propagate in Spring
Stem cuttings in water or perlite: Pothos (roots in 7 to 14 days), heartleaf philodendron (7 to 14 days), tradescantia (5 to 10 days), monstera (14 to 28 days; include a node and aerial root), begonia (14 to 21 days).
Division: Snake plants (separate rhizomes with roots), peace lily (pull apart individual crowns), calathea and maranta (separate at natural rhizome division points), ferns (split the root ball into sections with several fronds each).
Leaf cuttings: Begonia rex (pin a scored leaf on moist soil), succulents (callus two to three days, then lay on soil), African violets (leaf with stem in moist perlite; four to six weeks to plantlets).
Tips for Faster Rooting
Rooting hormone (Garden Safe TakeRoot powder or Clonex gel) measurably speeds things up for slower species like monstera, rubber plants, and hoyas. Dip the cut end before placing in your medium.
Keep cuttings warm. A seedling heat mat set to 75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit can cut rooting time nearly in half. Place in bright indirect light, never direct sun; cuttings without roots can't replace water lost through transpiration.

Pest Inspection: Don't Skip This
Nobody enjoys this part, but skipping it costs you later. Spring is when pest populations explode.[7] Spider mites, mealybugs, scale, and thrips all reproduce faster in warmer conditions with longer daylight. A small colony that was barely visible in winter can become a full infestation within three to four weeks.
What to Look For
Spider mites: Fine webbing between leaves and stems, stippled yellowing on leaf surfaces. Wipe a white paper towel across the underside of a leaf; tiny red, brown, or green streaks confirm them.[7]
Mealybugs: White, cottony masses in leaf axils and along midribs. They hide in tight crevices, so inspect joints and the undersides of leaves closely.
Scale: Brown or tan bumps on stems and leaf undersides that don't move and look like part of the plant. Scrape with a fingernail; if it comes off and leaves a wet spot, it's scale.
Thrips: Silvery or bronze streaks on leaves, often with tiny black dots (frass). The insects themselves are 1 to 2 mm and hard to see directly.[7]
Fungus gnats: Small black flies near soil. Adults are harmless, but larvae feed on root hairs and can weaken young plants.
Prevention Protocol
Give every plant a thorough inspection. Turn leaves over. Check stem junctions. Use your phone camera's zoom for small pests.
Even if you find nothing, preventive treatment is good practice. Cold-pressed neem oil (Harris Neem Oil or Organic Neem Bliss), diluted per label instructions and sprayed on all leaf surfaces, creates a hostile environment for most soft-bodied pests.[7] Apply every two weeks for three treatments as a spring baseline.
For thrips, neem is less effective. Spinosad-based sprays (Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew) or systemic granules containing imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid (Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control), work better. Systemics are controversial for pollinator impact, but for indoor-only plants that stay indoors permanently, that concern doesn't apply.
Warning: If you use systemic insecticides, label the plant clearly and never move it outdoors where bees or other pollinators might visit its flowers. Systemics are absorbed by the plant and present in all tissues, including pollen and nectar.[7]

Cleaning Leaves
Winter means closed windows, running heaters, and dust settling on every horizontal surface, including your plant leaves. A layer of dust blocks light from reaching the chloroplasts and clogs the stomata (the microscopic pores that handle gas exchange).[2] Cleaning leaves in spring directly boosts photosynthesis.
Large-leafed plants (monstera, fiddle leaf fig, rubber plant): Wipe each leaf with a damp microfiber cloth, supporting from underneath to avoid snapping the petiole. Get both surfaces.
Small-leafed or bushy plants (ferns, calathea, fittonia): Shower them gently in the bathtub with lukewarm water at low pressure. Drain thoroughly before returning to their spots.
Fuzzy-leafed plants (African violets, some begonias): Use a soft, dry paintbrush. Water on fuzzy leaves causes brown spots.
Skip leaf shine products. Commercial sprays, mayonnaise, and oils coat the stomata and interfere with transpiration. A damp cloth is all you need.
Combine cleaning with inspection: While you're cleaning, inspect closely. You're already holding each leaf and looking at it carefully, which makes this the perfect time to spot early pest issues, fungal spots, or nutrient deficiency patterns.[7]
Outdoor Transition: Hardening Off
If you plan to move houseplants outdoors for summer, the transition has to be gradual.[1] A plant living in 200 to 500 foot-candles indoors will burn within hours in 5,000+ foot-candles of outdoor light, even in shade.
The Hardening-Off Process
Week 1: Full shade outdoors only (covered porch, north-facing wall). Two to three hours per day, then back inside.
Week 2: Four to six hours in full shade. By the end of the week, leave them out overnight if temperatures stay above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Week 3: Introduce gentle morning sun only (first two to three hours after sunrise). Continue avoiding midday and afternoon sun.
Week 4: Most plants can handle their target outdoor exposure. Shade-lovers stay in filtered light. Sun-tolerant plants (hoyas, jade, citrus) can take a few hours of direct morning sun.[4]
Never put these plants in direct outdoor sun, even after hardening off: ferns, calatheas, marantas, most begonias, and fittonias. They burn fast and don't recover.
Watch overnight temps: Check the overnight forecast before leaving plants out. A surprise cold snap to 45 degrees Fahrenheit or below can damage tropical plants. It's better to bring them in for one night than lose foliage to cold damage.[2]
Outdoor plants encounter pests they'd never see inside. Inspect weekly, and always do a thorough treatment before bringing plants back inside in fall. Many indoor infestations originate from summer hitchhikers.[7]

Month-by-Month Timeline (Northern Hemisphere)
March: Assessment and Preparation
This is your planning month. You're gathering information, not taking drastic action.
- Observe which plants are showing early growth signals
- Clean all windows (inside and outside) to maximize light transmission
- Inventory your supplies: potting mix, perlite, pots, fertilizer, pruning tools
- Order anything you need so it arrives before April
- Begin cleaning leaves on your entire collection
- Do a thorough pest inspection on every plant[7]
- Start watering slightly more frequently if plants are drying out faster
- If you see active new growth on fast growers (pothos, tradescantia), you can start fertilizing at quarter-strength[3]
April: Active Repotting and Feeding
This is the high-intensity month. The bulk of your spring care tasks happen now.
- Repot everything that needs it, prioritizing the most root-bound plants first[6]
- Begin fertilizer at half-strength for plants showing active growth[3]
- Prune leggy, damaged, or overgrown growth[1]
- Take spring cuttings and start propagation projects
- Rotate all plants a quarter turn
- Reassess plant placement as sun angles change
- Treat any pest issues identified during March inspections
- Start hardening-off protocol for plants destined for outdoor summer placement
May: Fine-Tuning and Monitoring
By May, most of the heavy lifting is done. Now you maintain and adjust.
- Move to full-strength fertilizer for established, actively growing plants[5]
- Monitor recently repotted plants for signs of transplant stress (wilting, leaf drop); water carefully and hold off on fertilizer for three to four weeks after repotting
- Continue hardening-off process; move plants to their outdoor summer positions
- Watch for sunburn on plants near south and west windows as sun intensity peaks[4]
- Second round of pest prevention spraying (neem oil or your preferred treatment)[7]
- Check propagation projects; pot up any cuttings that have developed roots longer than one to two inches
- Adjust watering frequency upward as temperatures rise and growth accelerates[2]
The Spring Plant Care Checklist
Print this out. Tape it inside your plant cabinet. Check things off as you go.
Block out a Saturday. Put on a podcast. Lay down newspaper. Work through your collection one plant at a time.
Inspection and Cleaning
- Clean all windows near plants (inside and outside)
- Wipe or shower every plant to remove dust
- Inspect all plants for pests (check undersides of leaves, stem junctions, soil surface)[7]
- Treat any pest issues found; apply preventive neem oil spray
- Remove all dead or dying leaves and stems
Repotting
- Identify which plants need repotting (check roots, soil condition, pot size)[6]
- Acquire pots (one size up from current), fresh potting mix, and amendments
- Repot in priority order: most root-bound first
- Water thoroughly after repotting; hold fertilizer for three to four weeks on newly repotted plants
Fertilizing
- Begin at quarter to half-strength once active growth is confirmed[3]
- Ramp up to full-strength over three to four feedings
- Always water before applying liquid fertilizer
- Set a recurring calendar reminder for feeding days
Pruning and Propagation
- Prune leggy, overgrown, or damaged growth[1]

- Check cuttings weekly; change water every five to seven days
Light and Watering

Common Spring Mistakes
Repotting too aggressively. Going up two or three pot sizes because "it'll grow into it" is how you get root rot in June. One size up. Always.[6]
Fertilizing before the plant is ready. Wait for visible new growth. Feeding a dormant plant builds up salts that burn roots.[3]
Sunburning plants by moving them too fast. Even moving from a north window to a south window indoors requires a few days of adjustment. Outdoors, it's far worse.[1]
Ignoring pests because "it's just one bug." It is never just one. Treat immediately and monitor weekly.[7]
Overwatering newly repotted plants. Fresh soil holds more moisture than compacted old soil. Water once after repotting, then let it dry to the appropriate level before watering again.[6]
Spring is a short window. The work you put in now pays off for the rest of the year. A properly repotted, fertilized, pest-free plant in April will give you six months of vigorous growth and minimal problems. Block out a Saturday. Put on a podcast. Lay down newspaper.
